As well as providing care and support, beautiful and well-designed homes, fantastic facilities and extensive landscaped grounds, Lynwood Village wants its residents to enjoy ‘wellness’. In this blog, our General Manager, Colin Cole, explains what wellness is and how life at Lynwood will enable our residents to enjoy it.

What exactly is ‘wellness’?

Wellness is the art of keeping well in mind, body and spirit. Rather than simply treating problems when they arise, wellness encourages preventing problems in the first place. For example, we all know exercise is good for you and helps keep you well, so Lynwood Village has a wide range of leisure options on-site to help keep you physically active. Whether you enjoy carpet bowls, swimming, visiting the fitness centre or simply strolling around the grounds there are plenty of ways to keep moving. We will also have a Personal Trainer who will design specific personal fitness plans for people, whatever their capabilities, and provide motivation to help them attain the fitness level they desire.

Nutritious food is also hugely important for keeping well, so there will be a range of restaurant options within the village where residents can have a hot, healthy meal when they don’t feel like cooking.

Good company and social contact are also vital to keep you feeling well. Loneliness can have a significant, detrimental effect on your health. Living in a retirement village not only gives you the practical support and care you might need, but you can also be among other people when you want company. Whether it’s having coffee with a friend, a trip to the hairdresser’s, joining in with an organised activity or trip out, you only need be alone when you want to be.

On-site access to physiotherapy and hydrotherapy

As well as these more general routes to wellness, Lynwood Village will also provide access to physiotherapy and hydrotherapy. You’re probably familiar with physiotherapy as a treatment for injuries or rehabilitation after a stroke or operation, but there’s a lot more to it than that. It can play a key role in maintaining physical confidence and preventing health problems, so we are delighted to be able to offer our residents access to experienced physiotherapy and hydrotherapy practitioners on-site.

What can physiotherapy do for you?

As we get older, our hearing can deteriorate which affects our balance. This can mean it’s more common to trip and fall over. Falls are one of the most common causes of injury in older people. Physiotherapists can recommend exercises to help improve and maintain muscle strength, this improves stability and confidence, which play a key role in falls prevention. The latest laser therapy used by physios can also help repair pulled muscles more quickly, so you are steadier on your feet, and regular massage can help prevent aches and pains, promoting a sense of wellbeing.

Hard-pressed GPs may not recommend physiotherapy because it can be difficult to access or expensive, so they may only be able to suggest rest and painkillers when a more proactive approach would yield greater, long-term health benefits. At Lynwood we’re inviting experienced physiotherapy practitioners to provide their services direct to our residents, on-site in the treatment rooms that will form part of our central facilities. Acupuncture, now recognised as a valid complementary therapy will also be available, in addition to chiropody, reflexology and beauty treatments.

Take the weight off – with hydrotherapy

We’re extremely fortunate that Lynwood Village will also have a hydrotherapy pool. The warm water of the hydrotherapy pool is ideal for older people and the disabled as it helps maintain your core temperature during treatment, overseen by a physiotherapist. It is particularly suitable for people with arthritis as you can exercise while supported in warm water which takes the pressure off your joints and provides pain relief. There are many conditions that would benefit from hydrotherapy but, like physiotherapy, it can be hard to access which is why it’s such a bonus for our residents to have this facility on site.

Wellness is a holistic approach to feeling well in body and mind. We think Lynwood Village offers everything you could need to be well, stay well and feel great. Come and see us to find out more.
