A blog by Sue Simonds, Wellness Manager at Lynwood Village
One of the wonderful things about Lynwood Village is that there is always someone to talk to. It’s one of the main reasons people choose to move here. You’ll often bump in to someone in the coffee shop or on your way to the pool and it’s easy to meet people and make new friends. In addition to those spontaneous meetings we organise a wide range of activities, events and excursions. Having somewhere to be and something to do can have a transformative effect and we often see huge improvements in our residents’ mood and wellbeing when they move here.
There are different activities scheduled throughout each day, so residents always have a choice of things to do.
Our aquatic therapy classes, which take place in our pool, and our balance classes for all abilities, are very popular and participants say they rapidly notice an improvement in their balance, mobility and fitness. If you prefer to exercise on dry land then a session in the gym with our qualified and experienced personal trainer Lee Cooper will help you set goals, and teach you how to use the equipment safely.
After all that exercise it might be time for a social gathering in the coffee shop or bar. Some of these are organised as discussion or interest groups, others just happen when you bump into someone and end up staying for a chat. More cerebral activities include: Social Bridge, Board Games, Music Appreciation, Knit and Natter, or the very popular Lynwood Village Choir and there are regular evening film screenings too. Residents can play snooker, carpet bowls, table tennis, giant chess and croquet or putting on the croquet lawn at any time.
Places to go…
Getting out and about is equally important and we offer weekly trips to local supermarkets and shops which always prove to be very popular. Good use is made of our private minibus by visiting local places of interest, garden centres and during the warmer months amble and ramble trips to local beauty spots. We are always happy to organise trips to other locations if residents tell us where they’d like to go. We use a local coach company for those day trips further afield and have secured a special collection point outside the village for the convenience of our residents. We also arrange trips to Coworth Park to watch the polo or enjoy a speaker lunch.
There’s absolutely no pressure to join in, it’s very much up to the individual to decide what they want to do but, because everything is right on your doorstep, it’s easy to get involved.
Things to see…
As well as our regular activities schedule and local trips, we organise evenings ‘out’ in the Village. Whether it’s Chinese New Year, Race or Quiz Nights, the Summer BBQ, Dinner Dance or an evening with a wonderful singer, we know how to have a good time!
All these activities and events enable people to make friends, spend time with others and enjoy easy social interaction without the need to travel or make special arrangements. From being at home alone our residents suddenly find they are out and about, making new friends and going home at the end of the day to a safe, comfortable place where help is always at hand.
